JOE'S LOCKER ROOM ARCHIVES

by Joe - jgand@pcfootball.net

12-21-06

Nobody likes a cheater…

…and no matter how much we may like looking at Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley run around screen sailing the Caribbean, we do not like pirates. Especially when it comes to cd-keys that allow someone to buy pirated software and play it on their system.

Now I’ll get to the year-end column in just a minute but there is something that needs to be said and I need the entire community to read this…

Recently we have had a couple of idiots register for the forums and try to use our forums to advertise sites where cd-keys could be bought for certain games. We here at PC Football decided a long time ago that we did not want to have anything to do with cd-keys because it was taking money away from the gaming companies that continued to put out the games that we love to play. When that happens, the prices go up, games become more expensive, and some companies decide not to put out games for the PC anymore.

I decided to deal with these guys in the best way that I know how – their posts were deleted and they were banned from the site.

Like I said already in the forums:

for those of you who question what right I have to take this action - I believe you are missing the point. We want to keep things on the up-and-up here at PCF when it comes to supporting the business practices of software gaming companies. Having something like that on this site that allows gamers to get pirated copies of software and use a cd-key to get the game to run and/or install is not very supportive. In fact it is downright theft. Now you might think that it might not effect a big-time company like EA - but what about the little guys like Grey Dog or Winter Valley ? How do you think it might effect them and their bottom line?

Personally if someone wants to find a cd-key for a game that they have then it is up to them and their conscience. But I don’t want any of this visiting our house and making us look like a bunch of crooks. We already look like a bunch of un-washed, un-employed, un-educated deviants to everyone who wants to politicize the playing of video games to begin with. We really don’t need to be giving them any more ammunition to use against us.

Engaging in acts of piracy like this is just another mark against us.

So is going to a site and buying a hack or bot that you can use to bypass anti-cheating software for the most popular online shooters like Battlefield, Counter-Strike or Quake 4.

At least this is what Chuck Osborn has discovered in the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine. In his latest column entitled Killing Box he reveals that there are sites out there that you can go to in order to get these cheats that will allow you to get past those precautions on various online servers, and cheat your way to a top ranking. This has caused some major problems within the gaming community where good players have been accused of cheating, innocent people have been banned from servers, and gamers have simply quit playing the games on the PC altogether and switched to consoles because they were tired of having to deal with the cheats.

This is not only bad news for the online community but bad for PC gaming as a whole. “If one of them is doing it, then maybe they are all doing it.” It just makes us look like a bunch of morons who can’t get anything in life without taking some kind of shortcut. Cheaters are just as bad as the quitters who will pause or quit a game when they are losing in the hope that it will preserve their high ranking.

I don’t like either one of these guys, the cheaters or the pirates. I just hope that someday soon this will all be resolved for the benefit of all gamers out there and that we come out of this stronger as a community.

So for all you cheaters and pirates out there, do the rest of us a favor – take your sorry asses someplace else. We don’t want or need your kind around here.

Having said that, it is time for the 2006 edition of…

The Good, the Bad, and the Downright Idiotic

Good – Madden NFL ’07 comes out

Bad – Again with the QB Vision?

Good – Improved blocking in the running game

Bad – Anybody have the hang of it yet?

Good – New and improved scouting system

Bad – Oh enough with the Superstar Mode already!!!

Good – Everybody seems to like it

Bad – OK, I need to find room on my hard drive to install it, so should I uninstall FIFA 2004, Madden 2004 and NCAA ’99?

We miss you – NCAA Football ’07 for the PC

This makes up for it – Grey Dog Software’s Bowl Bound College Football. The 1.51 version is the best update of the lot.

Even Better – All of the mods that have been made that enable you to play the actual 1-A, 1-AA, Div II and Div III schools without having to do all of the research and internet searches for graphics yourself.

Lots of fun – My Long Beach St. 49ers, in their 5th year in my dynasty, got to 4th in the BCS!

Are you kidding me? – I get to 4th in the BCS and all I get is the MPC Computers Bowl?!? DAMN YOU TCU AND UTAH !!!!!!!!!!!!

Good – I was finally able to restore the access of BigBaldBen, Jstrapp, Concussion and Phenom. So if you guys are open to it you can come back any time you want.

Bad – Having to deal with idiots who want to use the forums to advertise a cd-key site. Look, I don’t want that crap on my boards! If you keep doing it then I will keep “slipping in the shower” and hitting the ban button “by mistake!!!”

Good – Ending a long streak of not being able to sell someone a Rainbow back in August

Bad – It’s the only Rainbow I’ve sold all year. So I’ve made a grand total of $300.00 this year!!! HOW DO YA LIKE DEM APPLES UNCLE SAM?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

Silver Lining – I may have found a new gig. It seems a lot easier to market this product, and people can’t tell me that they don’t need something like this because everyone does! Anyone ever hear of MasterGuard Smoke and Fire Alarms? Me neither until a few months ago, but I don’t have to try to get into someone’s house, I just have to get them to come to a free meal!!!! Then, they invite me into their place, I do a walk-through inspection, and they buy a fire alarm system from me!!!!! How cool is that?!?!?

Good – New Orleans Saints becomes the “Team America ’s rooting for” Makes me want to go out and buy a Reggie Bush Jersey.

Bad – Da Bears might keep them from a Super Bowl.

Good – Michigan v OSU

Bad – Trouble at Miami . Fights, shootings, if Coker didn’t get fired I think he should have quit to escape the madhouse.

Good – …and the Heisman goes to - Troy Smith, Quarterback, Ohio State

Bad – Boise State ’s Ian Johnson only 8th in the Heisman balloting?!?

Good – Boise State striking one for the little guys by crashing the BCS party.

Idiotic – All of the “experts” who are predicting Oklahoma will blow out the Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl.

Look, BSU is a lot better than people are giving them credit for. And let me remind you of something – Utah 35, Pittsburgh 7.

Good – Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby

Bad – Barbaro breaking a leg in The Preakness Stakes

Great – Barbaro is doing well and should be released to go home soon. He may never race again, but he will now get a chance to make his mark in the stud barn.

Good – Italy in the World Cup

Bad – USA in the World Cup

Idiotic – Zinedine Zidane. Headbutt. ‘nuff said.

Good – The Steelers get one for the thumb

Thank you – Jerome Bettis

Idiotic – I know a lot of people might disagree on this, but for Ben Rothlisberger to not protect the most valuable dome in Pittsburgh by not wearing a helmet while on a motorcycle has to be the dumbest move of the year. Top it off with the fact that he didn’t have a license gets him the “Bonehead of the Year” award.

Great – The Winter Olympics

Bad – Bode Miller

Idiotic – Lindsey Jacobellis hot-dogging as she was about to cross the finish line and then falling causing her to lose the Gold Medal.

Good – Floyd Landis’ run in the Tour de France

Bad – His positive drug test after the race

Suspicious – A French newspaper breaks the story that Landis’ “B” sample may have been tampered with by the lab

Better than Kornakova – Maria Sharapova

Scorched Earth – Duke Lacrosse

A real tragedy – Another school shooting…IN AMISH COUNTRY?!?!?!?!?

Good – Doctor Who, Desperate Housewives, Medium, House, Bones, Mythbusters, Law & Order, L & O: Special Victims Unit, L & O: Criminal Intent, Boston Legal, Stargate SG-!, Stargate: Atlantis, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Sheild, Monk, The Dead Zone, The 4400, Psyche

Bad – Reality TV STILL WON’T DIE!!!!!!!!

Shocker – Shane killing Lem with a grenade on The Sheild

Good – Democracy is alive and well in America as the Democrats take back the House and the Senate

Bad – All the sore loser Republicans who think that the country will go down the tubes with the Democrats in charge

Idiotic – Rep. Mark Foley and Rev. Haggart giving Conservatism and the “family values” party a bad name.

It’s about time – Rumsfeld resigns

Idiotic – The notion that W should now be impeached. I have come to the conclusion that W is the lesser of two evils. Besides, do you know what we would be stuck with if he were impeached?!?

I have two words for you – PRESIDENT CHENEY!!!!!!

In Memorium – Peter Boyle (“Everybody Loves Raymond” “Young Frankenstein”), Bo Schembechler, Lamar Hunt (Owner, Kansas City Chiefs), Steve Irwin, Don Knotts, Kirby Puckett, Red Auerbach, Curt Gowdy, Aaron Spelling, Corey Lidle,

Well that's all that I have for this year...thank God.

On behalf of my wife Molly and myself I would like to wish you all...

a very Merry Christmas!

And like I said last year, if you prefer a “Politically Correct” version…

May you all have a Merry, Safe, Jolly and…

Happy ChristmaHanuKwanzukka!!!

Until next year…
